Dr. Lawrence Harkless is a pioneering figure in podiatric medicine and diabetic limb preservation, widely recognized for integrating podiatry into academic health science centers and advancing interdisciplinary models of care. He is Founding Dean and Professor Emeritus of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Podiatric Medicine and previously served as the Louis T. Bogy Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Over his distinguished career, Dr. Harkless has championed education, collaboration, and mentorship across disciplines — shaping generations of clinicians and researchers in diabetic foot care. His leadership has been honored with numerous awards, including the ADA’s Outstanding Educator Award and the APMA Distinguished Service Citation.
